Metric definitions, scope and reference guidance

All periods use a fictional two-office service company with 100 average employees and comparable boundaries. 2026 is a target scenario, not achieved performance. Target counts compare the selected values with the nine 2026 thresholds; no weighted ESG score is calculated.

Environmental

Selected-source emissions (2025): Scope 1: 36; location-based Scope 2: 144; selected Scope 3: 180 tCO₂e. The 2024 comparable total was 450. Scope 3 includes business travel and employee commuting only. Excluded value-chain sources mean this is not a complete footprint.

Electricity intensity (2025): 240,000 kWh consumed across both offices ÷ 100 average employees in 2025. Use the same boundary and headcount method when comparing periods.

Renewable electricity (2025): 144,000 kWh with qualifying renewable supply evidence ÷ 240,000 kWh consumed. A procurement indicator: this percentage does not automatically reduce location-based Scope 2 emissions.

Social

Learning & development (2025): 2,400 completed learning hours ÷ 100 average employees. Completion time measures participation, not demonstrated competence or training quality.

Voluntary turnover (2025): 8 voluntary departures ÷ 100 average employees × 100. Interpret with role, labour-market and employee feedback context; a lower rate alone does not prove a healthy workplace.

Recordable work injuries (2025): Fictional employee case count for the two-office boundary. No incidents recorded does not establish an absence of hazards. Review near misses, reporting quality and prevention actions too.

Governance

Ethics training (2025): 96 of 100 assigned employees completed the annual ethics course. Completion is an input measure, not proof of ethical conduct.

Supplier ESG screening (2025): 16 of 20 designated priority suppliers screened against documented environmental, labour and conduct criteria. Screening is not an audit or a guarantee of supplier performance.

Overdue corrective actions (2025): 2 actions past their approved due dates at 31 December 2025. Closed actions require completion evidence and accountable-owner review; severity must be assessed separately.

Emissions exclude unlisted Scope 3 sources and offsets. Missing data must not be treated as zero. Choose targets and material topics for your own context; this is not a certified report or an industry benchmark.

PRACTICAL ESG RESOURCES

Understand. Measure. Improve.

Start with our practical ESG guide, then build an initial carbon estimate from your organization’s activity records.

Organizational carbon-footprint calculator

Estimate emissions from selected sources for one reporting period. This is a screening tool, not a complete GHG inventory, verified footprint or overall ESG rating. Values remain in this browser page and are not submitted or stored.

Reporting context

Enter totals for the period, not monthly averages. Blank activities are excluded; zero means a confirmed zero. For every included source, enter a published factor and its source/year. No universal factors are assumed.

Factors must be in kg CO₂e per unit shown. Use combustion-only factors for Scope 1; a location-based grid factor for electricity. For refrigerants, use the named gas’s GWP and identify the assessment basis. Do not use a CO₂-only factor as if it covered all greenhouse gases.

Scope 1 · Diesel consumed
Scope 1 · Petrol consumed
Scope 1 · Refrigerant leaked (one gas)
Scope 2 · Purchased electricity
Scope 3 · Business travel (one mode)
Scope 3 · Waste (one treatment)

Other Scope 3 must exclude travel/waste already entered. The single-mode fields do not combine multiple travel modes, waste treatments or refrigerant gases. Aggregate those externally using matching factors and retain workings; do not substitute an unweighted average factor.

Method, factor sources and limitations

Each activity × its factor ÷ 1,000 gives tonnes CO₂e. Totals are not annualized. Results cannot establish full GHG Protocol conformity or peer performance. Keep supporting records and review completeness with a competent practitioner before disclosure.

Obtain factors appropriate to your country and reporting year. Sri Lankan users should confirm a relevant grid factor with the responsible local authority or supplier. The EPA dataset is a resource for appropriate US contexts, not a Sri Lankan default.
